May is Older Americans Month!!!
Let’s take time this month to celebrate being an older adult. Come to the senior center for great programs and to meet your friends. This is your month to enjoy all that the senior center has to offer. “Your Story Book”

“We Need to Talk: Conversations about Driving”
Wednesday, May 2, 2012 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. - Arden Courts of Avon
This program is co-sponsored by Arden Courts of Avon and is being held at Arden Courts of Avon- 100 Fisher Drive, Avon, CT. Please join Bob Rodman from AARP as he discusses the program- We Need to Talk: Conversations about Driving. Need help having “the talk” with a loved one? Sponsored by AARP Driver Safety, this class guides families in determining when it’s time for their loved ones to hang up the keys. The seminar is FREE and offers practical tips and advice on three main topics: 1. The Meaning of Driving – Find out what driving means to older adults and the emotions they may face when having to give it up. 2. Observing Driving Skills – Learn to observe your loved one’s driving skills objectively and talk about alternatives to driving. 3. Planning Conversations – Discover how to have “the talk” while encouraging independence. It’s a difficult conversation to initiate, but with the right tools, you can really make a difference in the life of an older driver. Please call

“Health Talk: Skin Cancer & Precancer”

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year than breast, colon, prostate, and lung cancers combined. One in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer during their lifetime. If caught at an early stage this form of cancer can be curable. Come learn what you NEED to know and what you need to LOOK for. Lori Hoover, RN BSN, a registered nurse and Manager of Community Programs with the Farmington Valley VNA will present this health talk and provide educational literature. “Movie - The Undefeated”

This movie stars John Wayne & Rock Hudson in this rollicking classic set in Mexico during the tumultuous post-Civil War days. As Union Cavalry officer John Henry Thomas (John Wayne) & former Confederate Colonel James Langdon (Rock Hudson) lead their men into new territories to begin a new life, their paths cross. Now, caught between Mexican rebels and the Emperor’s forces, they find themselves fighting side by side and must forge an uneasy friendship in order to survive. Based on a story by Stanley L. Intergenerational Planting Program

Avon Senior Center is teaming up with Avon Youth Services for an Intergenerational Planting Program at the senior center. Jennifer, Senior Center Coordinator and Mihaela, Youth Services Coordinator are gathering students and seniors together to finish the planting we started last fall. The program was for Red Ribbon Week which is to “Be Substance Free” and the students and seniors completed round one of the planting and this is round two. “Caregiver Support Group”

The Farmington Valley VNA is sponsoring a support group for adults who are caregivers. The group is open to all adults who are caring for a loved one. Caring for another can be emotionally and physically exhausting. This is an opportunity to rejuvenate yourself by talking with others who truly understand. We can all learn from each other. Come and be surrounded by others who care and are in search of support. This group will be facilitated by the Farmington Valley VNA Social Worker, Laura Perednia, LCSW. Curious about Apple iPad? Never heard of an iPad? Join Evan, a senior from Avon High School, for iPad lessons. Lessons cover basic usage and any questions you may have. The iPad presents a fun and easy way to browse the internet, check email, read e-books, and much more. No experience required; newcomers welcome! iPads provided by the senior center.
CHOICES Medicare Counseling
The Avon Senior Center offers Medicare Counseling!! We had a Medicare Counselor that was in Avon, but he has moved out-of-state. We are now able to link up with the Canton Senior Center and Farmington Senior Center and their CHOICES Medicare Counselor. If you need Medicare Counseling, please feel free to call 860-693-5811 (Canton Senior Center) or 860-675-2490 (Farmington Senior Center).
Come and enjoy lunch at the Avon Senior Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays. CRT (Community Renewal Team) sponsors a lunch program at the Avon Senior Center, offering a hot, nutritious and health conscious meal. A printed menu is available each month, and reservations are required. To make a reservation, please call the Avon Senior Center the day before by 12:00 noon at 675-4355. The cost is a $2.00 donation for persons over the age of 60 and a $4.50 donation for persons 55-59 years of age. The lunch program is open to all seniors in the Town of Avon as well as surrounding towns. Come and join us and make some new friends.
